A Theme for 2017

The long-awaited theme of this year is...

THE YEAR OF LEARNING!

“With all thy getting get understanding” (Proverbs 4:7)
Learning (noun) the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or by being taught.

With Kate turning 5 this summer (and therefore being school-age) we have thought a lot about what her education (and ours!) would look like going forward for the rest of forever.

This is a different theme for us than any we've tried before, but will be an absolute adventure for our WHOLE family!

For many years we have discussed ideas regarding formal education and homeschooling, college degrees and trade skills, public settings for socialization, and core learning at home that involves the four of us working together. But up until now it has all been "maybe someday" and "eventually" talk. This year we are finally taking steps to put it all into action!

While many may not know this yet, Jon was accepted into a PhD program remotely through a University in England which would begin this Fall 2017. Putting together his proposal and going through the interview and acceptance process was definitely a joint effort. This 3-year program would allow us to continue living in the states while Jon works on his research and creative writing work and gain a doctorate degree. Now, with waiting on the word about funding to come through, we are anticipating changes ahead and how our family dynamic might adjust during this process!

In the meantime January has been an exciting month of really talking about what our ideal learning experience would look like for our family and children as they head into elementary years. A blend of homeschool, charter programs, and extracurricular (music, dance, and sport) activities which our kids could lead the direction on seemed perfect for us. We've asked friends and family how they have done it, what they wished they had done differently, and how we should approach it now. We've weighed many options and researched many schools. Our next step for February is to tour a few resources and prepare for our first set of enrollments in March! :D eeeee!

Along with the more structured look of our plan, we are majorly changing things at home. Steph has been working two jobs since we moved back to California, and is gradually changing those schedules to meet our family needs. In addition, Steph and Jon are working on designing a home routine that includes better emotional communication, and daily core activities to promote family work and discussion, while letting the kids lead the day and still making sure things get done ;) haha.

Learning is also important to us as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and as eternally progressing beings. A talk given in recent years to the youth of the church by President Gordon B. Hinckley stresses the importance of fulfilling our potential and acquiring as much education as we can. It is an excellent guide and one that we hope to refer back to throughout the year. You can read more of that here.

We are VERY excited about this year's theme and what it means all around. As with many of our themes, there are varied layers underneath the obvious plan. While schooling and education in that manner has certainly been at the forefront of our minds, learning in general is an ongoing process. Jon and Steph have been working on learning more about each other and effective ways to communicate as a couple. We have been attending weekly marriage counseling together, and reading more together again, which has been a very eye-opening process. Jon is also learning more about publishing and bookmaking, being a better bread-maker, and learning more about clothes making. Steph has been attempting some new sewing and quilt projects this month, and considering eventual ways to complete her college degree and start a business or two down the road. ;) Kate's current obsession is counting (which she can do up to 20 all on her own) and she is very interested in learning how to use our DSLR camera. Edwin is a whiz with his colors and getting better with his letters every day. Both of them ask questions CONSTANTLY, explore the world through play, and have a few special books memorized that they "read" to us on a daily basis! :) Our biggest goal right now is to foster and continue promoting that love of learning.

"Look, mom! An airplane!"

It's been really great to see our family grow and have the focus of our year be LEARNING. Learning new skills, learning about each other, and learning how to see the world differently.

We hope that you'll join us and seek out some new learning and understanding of your own this year!

Oh, The Places We'll Go!

Earlier this month we shared our new and exciting theme for the year: a United States road trip of epic proportions! But there are a lot of different ways that we could make this happen. This whole trip plan started based on the concept of the optimal road trip, outlined in Randal Olson's blog post here.

We took the map and list of landmarks, and customized it to the Alston family's interests, and where our friends and family live. Below is a general overview of our planned stops and landmarks we will be visiting! (All cities and states are listed in the order we plan to go.)

This is BASICALLY the route we will be going, except for some specific stops that have been changed to suit our needs

I tried to make this as easy to read as possible... States are listed in CAPITAL LETTERS, and different state visits are separated with a line that only has a hyphen. Cities where we are planning to stay overnight (or close areas) are indicated in parenthesis, in case you would like to volunteer to have us visit you, or know someone we should visit! Otherwise we will be camping almost the entire way. LDS Temples we plan to stop and take a picture at have ** around them. (We probably will not have time to do work in these temples, especially because we have two toddlers with us.) The main goal is to see the temples and share the beauty of a unified worldwide church with our kids. :) We have even added a couple more to the list in the past few weeks!

Thank you to EVERYONE who has contacted us so far with ideas and your favorite places to see. We are adding in and researching as many of your suggestions as possible!

Also, big thanks to Nonna and Papa Alston for the Idaho State Parks pass, and Beth Alston for the National Parks pass. :D  #ExtendedChristmasAwesomeness

The End

Whew! So there you have the gist of it. 48 states in 51 days. Some states we just pass through quickly, and others we spend a couple days exploring. It really is a sightseeing and photo taking tour as much as anything. We really have to be picky and choosy about where we are going and what we spend time and money to see! I wish we could do more in some areas, but experiences like So Cal, Chicago, visiting The Alamo, and seeing a show on Broadway will just have to be part of another trip someday. :)

So give us some input! And if you know anyone in these areas that might want to be part of our adventure, let us know. We love all you wonderful people and are excited for this great experience together!

A Theme for 2016

THIS. will be the biggest and best theme yet.

48 states, 22 temples, 51 days

#AlstonsYearOfAmerica

It all started last year when I shared a road trip FB post with Jon. Some of you may remember this post being shared around. It looked something like this:

It's a circular trip, so you hop on the trail in whatever state you're in, and ride it the rest of the way around until you're back home. I said to Jon "Next Summer??" being ENTIRELY serious. And ever since then, this Year of America plan has infested my brain.

For a couple of years now, Jon and I have had the major travel bug. We have talked about taking our family permanently on the road. It's part of why we tested out Pineapple Snow (Steph's etsy shop) to see if it could become self-sustaining. If I was able to sew-on-the-go, then we could live in a semi-permanent state of movement, and with our converted bus-turned-camper with built in sewing studio, we would homeschool and visit whomever we wanted WHENEVER we wanted, all year 'round.

Screen shot from our shared Pinterest board: Home Bus

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Enter: IDAHO.

The transition of moving to Idaho and being faced with school, work, and debt decisions made us slow down and really re-evaluate how we were approaching everything. We learned some extremely valuable things. And if you know me, you know that if I'm going to do something, I'm going to do it right. There is no room half-bakery. That being said, I became a budget-Nazi. Jon has been working his BEHIND off with two jobs, and we basically pretended like his teaching job at BYUI wasn't even there. Aside from tithing, we completely ignored those paychecks and threw them down to paying off bills and savings. We have a goal, and a plan, and we are well on our way!

Let me just say this: by April of this year, we will have everything completely paid off, and start working on a great savings, to accomplish the YEAR OF AMERICA 100%. debt. free.

This is our year.

The Year of America is a reward. It is a goal. It is a test run.

With the major push of family world traveling catching on, I have been jonesing so badly this year to get out there and start! Families like the Boyntons: @radish.so.red and the Hunts: @wanderlust.crew on IG have been inspiring me like crazy. I am so thankful for their examples and amazingness. Check them out! Preparation takes time, and I know it's worth it.

So here it is: We are gifting ourselves 51 solid days of togetherness as we traverse the entire country! (Or at least, the 48 continental United States). We decided that if we're ever going to make the idea of travel-life happen, we need to make sure we can do it and will enjoy it. Doing the Year of America road trip is a way for us to jump into a new state-of-mind and lifestyle, with minimal risk.

So the plan is this: July 21st 2016, when Spring semester comes to a close, and BYUI has a 6 week Summer Break, we take off from Idaho and head south to Utah. Then Arizona, Las Vegas, California, up to Oregon, and well, you get the idea. We will make it back to Rexburg on September 9th, with the weekend to spare before Fall semester starts on Monday the 12th.

Is it crazy?? Probably.
It is exciting?? Heck yes!
Are we going all-in to this plan? ABSOLUTELY.

But here's the best part: WE WANT YOU TO JOIN US.

Seriously, everyone.

Since we are seeing the ENTIRE country (I mean, within reason) we plan to visit as many of our friends and family as possible, AND if you want to come along for parts of our trip, we would be absolutely ecstatic! We realize that we won't be able to see everything in every state, and are going to have to pick and choose the major highlights. But that is where you especially come in. Tell us where you have traveled, where you have lived, where you grew up. We need to know the ins and outs of your state knowledge! I have done a TON of research up to this point, but I want to know your favorite things: places to eat, things to see, where to go, how to do it right. If you were a tourist in your home state, what would you absolutely not miss?

Also, there will be t-shirts! :)

Ultimately, when everything is said and done, the point of our yearly theme is ALWAYS to bring us closer together as a family. We discussed the pros and cons of doing this now when the kids are so little, and we worry a bit about them not remembering the whole thing. But we realized that you don't do things just because a person might or might not remember it. We still celebrate Christmas and birthdays before the kids really know what's going on. But that's not the point. It is the experience, establishing a tradition, and a mindset. It is something that they grow into, and something that we can learn from and having amazing experiences with too. The major goal here is to bring our family closer to Christ.
Closer to Love.
Closer to Forgiveness.
Closer to Peace.
Closer to Happiness.
Closer to HIM.
We are so excited to spend this time together, build memories, (see as many temples as we can!) attend church across the country with fellow Latter-Day Saints, and appreciate the beauty of the world that Heavenly Father has created for us--starting with our own backyard.

"No, never need an American look beyond his own country for the sublime and beautiful of natural scenery." -Washington Irving

So throw it at us! We have 6 months to officially plan, save, make reservations, partner up, and as we come your way, come and play with us! The Alston's Year of America is going to be the best Year ever. :D

Itinerary coming soon...

A Theme for 2015

On New Year's day Jon was rushing out the door for work. As he rapidly consumed his bowl of cereal, I stopped him mid bite and said, "Well, what is our theme for the new year??"

That's right. Even I am not privy to this information before the start of a new calendar.

Smiling from ear to ear Jon threw up his hands and said, "This! Is the year of OUTDOORS!"

I am super excited for this year's theme because it will encourage us to explore this new state we call home. Every month we will go on an outdoor adventure as a family. It could be a hike, or a camping trip, it could be a bonfire at the nearby sand dunes, building a snow castle, or a challenge to dig the biggest pit ever. Who knows.

Idaho is pretty gorgeous (for being mostly farmland) but with school this last semester being so crazy we've hardly had anytime to get to know it. This year we'll make every effort to document the mountains, trails, ghost towns, and fields, as we explore the outdoors around us!

LET'S DO THIS.

aw yeah.

WELCOME 2015!

2014 - The Year Of . . .

This year started off busy. 'Twas not for lack of a theme, however!

After a fun New Year's Eve with The Joyner's full of games I'd never heard of and delicious snacks (and an attempt at watching Groundhog Day, which I barely stayed awake for)

 We made it to MIDNIGHT!
No official pictures were taken of the ringing in of the New Year seeing as I was too tired.

On the 5 minute drive home, Jon could hardly wait to hear what the theme for 2014 was!

I happily announced that this year was to be

The Year of SATURDAYS

The rules are as follows:

Every Saturday of the year, we must do SOMETHING.

It doesn't have to be new. It doesn't have to be different. It doesn't have to be BIG. It just has to be something that involves us going on a date, or spending time together as a little family, but it has to be pre-planned, and it can't be something that we would have done already... like laundry.

Basically we always find ourselves in ruts - realizing that we haven't been on a date in months, or haven't really done anything noteworthy the whole week. Movies pass us by in the theaters that we always intended on seeing, and FHE just isn't a solid habit yet (although the quilt we have been working on for ages will hopefully motivate us to get some good use out of it!)

This year's theme is a reminder to help us TAKE TIME for each other and really make every week count. It's also an extension from last year (The Year of Exploration) so that we can continue to try new things and complete projects :)

Saturday 1 of this month, we went out to lunch at Claim Jumper with Summer and Riley. They are expecting their first baby (a girl!) just shortly after our baby Olivander, so we were really excited to see them before they headed back to Utah from Christmas break. We forgot to take a picture with them since we were on a rush out to this ADORABLE maternity photo session with Tadd and Kelly who are expecting their first baby (a surprise!) just 2 weeks ahead of us.

Proof of our lunch date with Summer and Riley will be forever documented in our new blog header for the year (pictured above!) in the center square. The "R" is from the Claim Jumper sign. Summer and Riley were the first to hear about our new theme and helped us jump start this blog header idea :)

Saturday 2 of this month, we went out to a new place for breakfast. I had actually been there before, but Jon had not. It's not "new" per se, but it was new for us. Country Gables Cafe had been voted best breakfast in Roseville, and my first time there I loved it! Unfortunately the second time there was not as great... and Jon was disappointed. Once again we forgot to take pictures - but I did get a snap of my leftovers ;)  Biscuits and Gravy with Country Potatoes. mmmm

Saturday 3 of this month was QUILT DAY! Some of you may have seen me post a little bit about it on Instagram.

We were able to get the final pieces of fabric at Beverly's and made sure EVERYTHING was cut and sorted. Our ambitious log cabin pattern is a 17 piece block creating a 36 block quilt. We even finally started sewing it together this week! Right now the blocks look like this:

I can't wait to see it all come together!

The 4th Saturday of this month has a plan - which will be blogged about separately :)

One of the reasons I am really excited for this year's theme is because we will get to put our DATE PASSPORT to good use!

You may remember when I gave it to Jon for Christmas.

We have since completed about 4 dates in the book!
Sometimes with friends, sometimes on our own. So far totally awesome.

It's been a good way for us to keep track of things we want to do, movies we want to see, and we can write a little bit about it afterwards! I'm especially glad that at the end of the year it will be a book of memories where we can look back and see all of the cool things we got to do. It's sort of like an interactive journal! It might also be fun 10 years from now to remember what was in theaters and see how our tastes might have changed.

Already we are thinking of new things to do each week, all the time! Going to the zoo, taking a day trip to San Francisco, exploring the redwoods of Humboldt, taking Kate to the beach for the first time - these are all things that we'll be attempting as we Saturday our way through 2014 :)

2014 is starting off to be pretty good!
We hope that you'll enjoy following the adventures of The Alston Family.

2013 - The Year Of...

Happy New Year!

As you may have discovered by now, we pick a theme for every year. Jon and I were talking about this last night and we're pretty sure this started in 2009; it was the year of chocolate. 2010 was the year of awesome. 2011 was the year of creation. 2012 was the year of pictures.

Every year we have taken the theme a little more seriously and gotten a little more into it.

This year was Jon's turn to decide. Right after Christmas he put a gift bag filled with tissue paper on our bed and said I would have to wait until New Year's day to open it! *grumpy face* I am terribly impatient.

So last night we got home at about 1am and it was time to reveal the theme!

Inside the bag I found these:

2013 - The Year of Exploration!

The way it will work is this: each month we will plan to try something new that we have never done before, but have always wanted to try. To kick it off, Jon got these books for 99 cents each online :) He has always wanted to try making his own paper and getting more into book printing, so these books will help with that.

I told Jon that "the year of exploration" made me think of traveling or a scavenger hunt or cooking! He said it can encompass all of these ideas. Trying something new each month is just the beginning.

Can't wait to see where this year will take us :)
